Create a School or a Teacher Website
How to Create a School or a Teacher Website by Yourself
Updated on January 31, 2017 by
Howard Steele
The face of education is changing, with Internet being right at the core of this change, and teachers and students have a lot to benefit from this fact. There are so many ways to use the web for education, and one of these is creating a school website.
A school website is not a whim or a tribute to fashion nowadays. A school is a kind of an ecosystem with lots of constituents. Information published at the website is an effective tool for the organization of the working process of any educational establishment. It is oriented towards the vast audience, which includes teachers, pupils, parents and school administration. A website can effectively contribute to the fruitful cooperation between these groups of people.
What is the purpose of creation of a teacher website? The image and activity of a contemporary teacher have changed a lot lately. In the XXI century, competition is not limited to trading only. Apart from the products and services that require active promotion, a teacher’s image and skills also prove to be an indispensible part of the contemporary process of education. A teacher, who has a personal website, has more chances to expand the field of activity, grow the reputation and recognition among the pupils, their parents and the colleagues.
How is it possible to create a school or a teacher website? What features should a website builder have to ideally cope with the task?
Criteria on Choosing the Service to Create a School Website
Not all the web building platforms are suitable to cope with the task. Some of them are too expensive, others don’t possess the required functionality and there are also those that are not convenient to use. Listed below are some of the requirements applicable to the suitable website builder you should give preference to when making your choice:
A system should offer a free
full-scaled plan .
It should have vast functionality . Websites of different institutions generally have a complex structure and use a specific set of modules (polls, forums, materials with extra fields, charts etc.). Not all the website builders can be used to create such sites.
A system should be easy to use . It goes without saying that teachers are educated people, but it’s doubtful that many of them are knowledgeable in the web development niche.
How to Create a School Website Using a Website Builder
That’s simple. To some extent, a school or a teacher website is a promo site, to which a forum may be attached in case of necessity. By the way, not all the platforms make it possible to realize the latter option. Regardless of their simplicity, forums are generally created on CMS. This is how the process of building a site looks in this case:
1. Sign up for the system. Most services make it possible to sign up with your social network account or via the e-mail.
2. Right after the sign up procedure, choose a template (give preference to mobile responsive templates).
3. Now, proceed to creating a
structure of your website . Add the required pages, upload content, change the template demo data with those of your own. Create the website menu points, attach static pages and dynamic sections (like a blog) to them. Change the website graphics (a header image, a background etc., if necessary).
4. As soon as you are done with structuring your website and filling it with content, you have to publish it to make it available for the users.
5. Finally, you will get a full-scaled school website absolutely for free.
It’s crucial to choose a convenient website builder to create a school or a teacher website. With its help, it is possible to cope with the technical aspects of the process. How can you achieve this goal? That’s easy, indeed! Website builders described below will help you gain the best result! They meet the requirements specified above, going far beyond the bounds.
Wix – the Best Website Builder for Teachers and Schools
Wix is well-known as a versatile website builder. It does offer a user-friendly interface and a library of templates tailored for teachers, schools, blogs, portfolios, business sites and so on. With Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) instrument, even teacher of the humanities can build own website from scratch.
Wix has a free plan, but with it the URL of your website will look like
user.wix.com/yoursitename . To connect your own domain name you should upgrade your plan alt least to ‘Connect domain’ ($4.50/mo).
Weebly – Best Website Builder to Create a School Website
Though Weebly isn’t a school website builder, it’s a great option for anyone who wants to set up a classroom site. Weebly has a separate version of the system designed specifically for teachers. It’s called Weebly for education. This platform not only lets pedagogues create school websites, but also allows students to create their own sites within the teacher’s account.
You can use it free or upgrade to Pro to get access to all Pro features (your students will also become Pro users, automatically).
What’s more, there’s a feature-rich Weebly Campus Edition that can be used to digitize the entire campus. The Campus Edition costs $499/year. It covers 20 teachers’ and 500 students’ profiles. You can add additional profiles to the base plan to meet your needs.
uCoz – Free Website Builder for Schools and Teachers
uCoz is a free website builder that also perfectly suits for school or teacher website. The specific feature of this website builder that you can create and manage numerous groups of members within your website. They can be students or their parents, or school staff. Such option is good enough for creating different tasks for each member and control over them.
You can build a school website with this platform for free. The company removes adverts from free school and charity sites – just contact their support and the advert will disappear. It’s a perfect proposal for public and state school that have a limited budget.
uKit – Best Website Builder for Teachers
uKit website builder allows to build a modern teacher’s website. If you don’t need all the bells and whistles that specialized solutions like Weebly Campus Edition offer, then you can take advantage of a this site builder. uKit lets you create a personalized teacher’s site in hours.
Among more than 350 website templates divided into 26 topics, this platform has an Education section, where you can find a tutor’s, teacher’s, school’s or kindergarten’s website’s template.
One of the key benefits of uKit is that all websites created with it are fully responsive. It means that your school website will be convenient to browse with any mobile device, either tablet or smartphone.
uKit has a simple tariffs and its pricing is relatively inexpensive. The Premium Package costs $4/mo with annual subscription and includes hosting, technical support and SEO optimization tools (a set of options that helps to make your site more attractive to search engines).
What Content Should You Upload to Your School Website?
Let’s try to review the content suitable for a school website. The basics of the process and provided below:
Information about a school and its contacts . Let’s face it – the choice of new schools is quite limited today. The prevailing amount of schools, however, have their history the target audience may be interested in. You can boast the achievements of your school, post old photos of a school, teachers and outstanding graduates. You should also provide the contact data of your school – its address, telephone numbers, Google Maps location etc. Information about the teaching staff will also be valuable. It involves the awards, education, career enhancement training and what not. This info will come in handy to those parents, who are right about to choose the best school for their kids. Anyway, competition between schools is still tough, isn’t it?
News, including photo reports of the activities, articles, announcements etc.
A section providing information about the classes. It should also involve the data about the class teachers, achievements and timetable.
Personal pages of pupils . This is where they can display their achievements, skills and learn how to hold themselves out.
Personal pages of teachers. This is a section of teachers’ achievements, where they can publish their projects, recommend different educative materials and give recommendations to the parents regarding the improvement of academic success of their children.
A forum or a discussion board. You will surely need it. It’s possible that you won’t need it right from the start, but you will definitely need it later. Is there a better possibility for a vast audience to take part in group discussions? Your forum should contain a number of branches, such as topics, opinions, reviews, discussions and ratings.
The points mentioned above should be enough to launch a school website. If you have any tasks that are not included into the list provided above, you will still be able to cope with them. You can develop your website for as long as you need it. It will drive the visitors right after the publication. Everyone will be interested in what you are ready to offer. You just have to upload/upgrade information in the blocks to make the resource functional and useful for the visitors.
Conclusion and Recommendations
Creation of a school website implies the boost of its image in the eyes of pupils, parents and potential investors. We live in the advanced age and it’s inadmissible to lag behind the time. A teacher website can also help solve lots of tasks. It can notably contribute to the professional activity of a teacher, making it more productive, interesting and even profitable. It’s not a secret that competition among the teachers exists nowadays. The online promotion of a noble image of a teacher will do no harm.
You or your school will be able to attract the attention of the colleagues, pupils and their parents. This is not to mention the recognition of other educational establishments. A website of this type doesn’t need any extra promotion. As soon as the target audience gets to know about it, it will start visiting it on a regular basis. This ensures organic traffic and quick progress without any promotion at all.

Easy way to make money

40 easy ways to make money quickly
by Owen Burek in
Make Money
Updated 1 August 2017
On this page you'll find all the best ways to make money in your spare time whilst at university based on our own experience. We'll keep adding new ways to this page so go ahead and bookmark it. And please do share your own ideas in the comments!
1. No-risk matched betting
Hands down the quickest way to make a lot of money (well, without breaking the law). Lots of students have genuinely made £100s from this technique. It's completely legal, risk free, tax free, and anyone can do it.
It works by taking advantage of free bets regularly offered by betting sites through 'matching' them at a betting exchange. Matched betting eliminates the risk (you are betting both for and
against a certain outcome).
This leaves you being able to squeeze out the free bet, which can be as much as £200! Multiply this by how many betting sites there are and you can quite easily come away with a profit of a few hundred pounds.
Owen walks you through how to make your first £15 profit (using a real life example) in this gem of a guide to matched betting . If you know of any better way to make £30/hr sitting at home, please let us know!
2. Online surveys
Credit: Julio Marquez – Flickr.com
An increasingly popular way for students to make money is to fill out online surveys in their spare time. Research companies are always recruiting new members to answer surveys and test new products.
For a few minutes of form filling, you can make a couple of quid which is paid as cash or rewards. You can bag up to £3 ($5) for some surveys!
A few good ones to try are:
Toluna, Vivatic ,
MySurvey, Valued Opinions ,
IPSOS , Global Test Market , The Opinion Panel , Crowdology ,
YouGov , Pinecone , OnePoll ,
SurveyBods , PopulusLive,
Hiving , PanelBase, MintVine ,
Opinion Outpost, Harris Poll , Mind Mover , New Vista ,
iPoll .
Also sign up for
Swagbucks which rewards you for surveys as well as simply surfing the web, watching videos and playing games.
Update: See our new full guide to the best paid online surveys !
3. Paid for searching the web
Interested in earning cash for doing what you already do online? This has to be one of the easiest methods of making money online without really any effort or change in your behavior.
This innovative idea by
Qmee.com rewards you for searching in Google, Bing or Yahoo. You just install a simple add-on to your browser and when you conduct a search there may be a few sponsored results alongside your normal search.
Each Qmee result has a cash reward attached – if you are interested in it simply click on it and collect your reward.
The best thing is there is no minimum to cashout – our first one was just 72p wired to our Paypal account. You also have the option to donate it to charity.
Sign up now for free and start earning from your own searches!

4. Online market trading
The historically hard-to-break world of investing in stock markets and currencies has been cracked wide open. Today there is no need to be a fat cat or fund the yachts of Wolf of Wall Street style stock brokers. You can do it all yourself with the help of online market trading platforms.
Having spent many hours researching this new opportunity, I've been experimenting with the two biggest platforms: Plus500 and
eToro.com .
Both offer free practice accounts, and Plus500 also give you a free £20 (without depositing, terms apply) for their CFD service which is worth taking up. Overall I prefer eToro with over 4.5 million users worldwide. It was recently featured in the BBC 2 documentary "Traders: Millions by the Minute" and the Financial Times .
One of the best things on eToro is the CopyTrader feature. This lets you literally see, follow and copy the investments of other top performing traders.
Follow George's complete guide to trading on eToro to learn more. I think $200 is a good amount to get the most out of the learning curve by trying out a few different markets. If nothing else you'll learn a great deal about various investments and industries.
Disclaimer: CFD trading can be volatile and you can lose your entire capital, so don't throw your life savings into it! Trading CFDs may not be suitable for you. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved.
5. Start your own website
Interested in generating passive income ? You need a website. It's THE way to make money while you sleep.
Starting a website with Bluehost takes less than 20 minutes, costs hardly anything and can be done by an 82 year-old . It only takes a bit of plugging on social media to get your first visitors, and there are plenty of ways to monetise your site.
Save the Student is just one example of a successful website, started at university by Owen Burek in his first year, which has since grown into a full-time and sizable enterprise.
Read Owen's step-by-step guide on how to start a website in 20 minutes . It's really one of the best assets you can have.
6. Review websites & apps for cash
Well it seems like you're pretty nifty with a web browser, so perhaps it's time to turn pro and browse websites as a paid and fun job!
Introducing UserTesting.com – a new platform that pays everyday people to review all kinds of websites. Each review takes around 20 minutes and bags you $10 (£6.50) via Paypal.
Simply sign up here, complete a test review and look forward to receiving websites in your inbox.
7. The 'Disney Vault' secret
To keep demand high across generations, Disney Studios carefully restrict the supply of some home release classics. They are locked away in the 'vault' for 8-10 years before being released for a short unspecified time.
Buy them in this window at normal retail price and you can turn a nice profit when they go off sale for another decade or so.
For example, in 2011 you could buy Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray 3D for just £24.99. In just a couple of years it was on Amazon for a staggering £74.99!
Importantly, not all Disney releases are subject to the vault and only the true classics will maintain such demand.
Right now there are just 2 titles out of the vault which I would recommend snapping up. They are Bambi Diamond Edition Blu-ray and The Lion King Diamond Edition Blu-ray .
8. 'Get Paid To' sites
Similar to making money from online surveys, GPT sites reward you in cash and vouchers for completing various offers or activities online.
The most popular sites today are Toluna, Swagbucks and
InboxPounds .
Exciting update! We'll soon be launching our own GPT service for our readers. Invites will be limited, please join our mailing list if you're interested in hearing once it's live:

9. Become a delivery rider or driver
Got a bicycle, motorbike or car? What about a Smartphone? That's all you need to make some extra money by delivering food or people whenever you've got some spare time.
Sign up as an Uber Driver and you can also apply to deliver with Uber Eats who are always on the hunt for new riders. They allow you total flexibility to work when you want, delivering food from restaurants to the customers' door. You can make around £15 an hour.
Double-up your opportunities by directly contacting local takeaways and bigger chains like Dominos to see if they have any delivery jobs going.
10. Write and publish a Kindle eBook
If students are good at anything, it's researching and writing. With the Amazon Kindle store, anyone can publish an eBook and make money.
And the Kindle app is now available on almost any device (laptops, iPads, smartphones and yes, Kindles) so your global market is huge!
List your book for £1.49 – £6.99 and you earn 70% of the sale. Considering Amazon is the ultimate selling machine (and remember people are looking to spend), that is a fantastic deal.
The key to success with eBooks is to create value, and write non-fiction. Simply bundling information you have researched and complied on a common problem (eg. 'secrets' to finding a job) and then presenting it in an easy to digest format (an eBook) justifies someone spending a few quid on it.
Another big tip is to have a great cover designed so it stands out, and once your book is live on the Kindle store it's really important to get some reviews so it shows up higher in results. Encourage readers to leave an honest review at the end of your book.
The best thing about this lucrative idea is that once you've invested the time (say 20 hours), you'll earn a passive income for years to come! For a step-by-step guide to publishing and earning with eBooks, see "How to write a nonfiction eBook in 21 days".
11. Affiliate marketing
If you've got a good presence on social media or perhaps you even have a blog or website, you can start bringing in money immediately by promoting all sorts of companies, products, services and offers online.
Sign up as a publisher on the
Awin network , check their offers blog or browse the merchant listings to find something you think your friends would be interested in, grab your affiliate link and share it. If someone buys (can be within up to 90 days) using your link you'll make a nice commission.
To take it a step further, set up a website (read our guide ) or a topical Facebook page and invite all your friends to join it and post your affiliate offers on there.
12. Mobile phone recycling
Credit: CannedTuna – Flickr.com
See how much you can get for your old mobile phone using our in-house mobile phone price comparison tool! Maybe ask your parents if they have any lying around too.
You can get some good money and help the environment by recycling mobile phones with certain companies listed on the comparison tool. But be aware: you won't always get the quoted cash since it depends on 'condition'. We recommend
Mobile Cash Mate for the fairest and highest payouts in most cases (they sent us a £203 cheque for an iPhone 5).
13. Become a 'Clickworker'
The Clickworker.com concept is based on 'internet crowd-sourcing' where businesses advertise specific, scalable tasks they need completing quickly. And for us, it's an easy way to make fast cash from our couch.
There are a variety of tasks, but most commonly they involve mindless data entry, web research or form filling. You are rewarded and paid in cash (via Paypal) for the work you do, and you can choose for what and when you work. Give it a go. [If you're US based, also try Amazon's ' Mechanical Turk'].
14. Claim tax back
Many students work part-time or during the summer months, and others will be on placements or paid internships. More often than not, if you are a student working during the year, you will be overpaying income tax.
Why? Simply because few students reach the personal tax-free income allowance each year
but are put on an emergency basic tax-code by their employers meaning tax is being paid when it shouldn't be.
To learn more and calculate how much tax back you might be due, see our guide on student tax refunds .
15. Get cashback when shopping
This is not only a way to make money but also to save money as a student. If you look at it in a different way then you are making money with every purchase you would have made anyway, whether it be 10% or 0.5% cashback.
There are a number of cashback sites out there which pay you the commission they otherwise would have earned.
We recommend signing up with
Top Cashback, Quidco.com and
Swagbucks which are free and offer the best selection of retailers and exclusives.
16. A part-time job
A part-time job is the obvious first choice, opted for by most students looking to supplement their student loan. It provides a pretty steady flow of income and can enable you to gain valuable work experience.
However, depending on where you live, jobs are not always easy to find. Check local classifieds, our student job search , student job websites and your university careers service for vacancies.
It's also worth signing up with the Graduate Recruitment Bureau , a free service which will match you with both part-time jobs or graduate opportunities.
Read our guide to finding a part-time job whilst studying for more tips.
17. Gigs on Fiverr
Fiverr is now the world's largest marketplace for people to make money selling small services (known as 'gigs').
What you offer could be absolutely anything, from writing and translating, social media posting, playing pranks and teaching to creating music, voiceovers and short video clips for people all around the world!
The default price is $5 (hence Fiverr..), but you can attach extra services to gigs for more money. Whilst it might not seem like much, it can quickly add up and there are plenty of examples of people making a really good living from the site. The key is to get a system in place which minimises the time spent on each gig.
But there is another way to profit even more from Fiverr for potentially far less work. How? By simply reselling gigs elsewhere. For example, find a decent logo designer then reply to jobs on Upwork or even local classifieds. A $5 spend can easily become $50+, and it's repeatable!
If you're not interested in selling at all there's SO much good stuff you can get done for yourself.
Have a browse and get inspired!
18. Review music for money
If you love music, make it your business by reviewing unsigned bands and artists online for cash with Slicethepie.
It can take a while to build up your reputation but some users of the site have said that they earn £40 a month. This may not sound like much, but if it's something you enjoy then it shouldn't be hard work and is another thing for your CV. Money you earn will be in $US but anyone can sign up and review.
To get started, head over to
Slicethepie now or read our quick guide for more info.
19. Sell your notes
If you don’t mind sharing your notes with other students it’s a great way to generate a little extra cash. There are sites out there that you can upload your notes to, along with your price, and then when another student downloads them you get paid.
Most of these sites like
Stuvia & Notesale are free for you to list your notes but tend to take a cut of your profit in order to handle the marketing etc so that you don’t have to go out there and promote your notes yourself.
You will most likely have to upload PDFs but it’s worth it for the return and you can submit handwritten notes but you’re likely to make more money if they’re typed up.
20. Sell second-hand course books
One great way to make money is to buy other students' text books at the end of the year, and then sell them just after freshers' week – when the new intake of students know that they need them!
You can either advertise on campus or list them online very easily on Amazon.co.uk Marketplace (just bear in mind they take a commission on books sold).
For more tips on selling items online click here.
21. Competitions
Entering competitions of course comes with no guarantees, but there is a growing community of so-called 'compers' in the UK consistently making up to £50,000 a year through all sorts of competitions.
Types of competitions available to enter range from simple registration forms and Facebook page liking to answering questions correctly over the phone to being a TV game show contestant. Imagine you made it onto Deal or No Deal instead of just watching it!
Start by entering our very own monthly student competition (Like our Facebook page to see when our next one is)!
Then head to our active competitions page to enter other free competitions that we have found. Just note that some of these sites may send you spam so use an alias email address and opt-out of as many of the offers as possible.
For loads more tips on achieving success and making money from competitions, read our
guide to entering competitions.
22. Buy and sell domain names
A domain name is just a website address (eg. 'savethestudent.org' or 'mysite.co.uk') and there are lots of extensions (.com, .net, .co.uk etc).
They cost as little as £1.99 to register with 123-reg.co.uk or
GoDaddy.com yet premium domain names can fetch £1,000s if not millions when sold on. In 2007 VacationRentals.com went for a cool $35m!
Now you're probably not going to come across anything like that, but you can still turn a quick profit with a bit of searching. The trick is to find available domain names which have some commercial value, snap them up and then list them for sale on a site like Sedo.com.
23. Mystery shopping

How To Start a Blog – Beginner’s Guide for 2017

– Guide by Jessica Knapp (updated May 10th 2017)

So, you want to start a blog huh? Great idea!

But…how the heck do you get started? There’s so much info out there on the web, and everyone’s telling you to do different things. Who do you listen to? Where’s the starting point?

Damnit, maybe you should just forget it – it’s too confusing!

Well, hold up. I used to be a blogging newbie too. I had the same problems. I started my blog (BloggingBasics101.com) way back in 2006, and I knew less than nothing about blogging. In fact it was only the week before I’d learnt what a blog was.

Now I know a ton about them, and my blog’s doing pretty well – I receive more than 300,000 unique visitors per month which makes me consider myself someone you could listen to and learn from when it comes to building your own blog. I’m not some sort ofGuru, but I certainly do know the basics.

I promise it’ll be simple, relativelyeasy, and definitely easy to understand (no stupid jargon). Sound good?

Awesome, let’s move on.

Why you should create a blog and join the blogging community

So below, I’m going to outlineexactly what you need to do to get started and set up your own personal blog. Before we dive in though, I really want to talk aboutWHY you should build a blog.

Note: If you already have a solid idea of the whys, then skip this and go right ahead with the guide.

Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information and news. There are literally millions of blogs online (don’t worry, you can make yours stand out and get noticed!).It’s a great way to express yourself and also a fantastic way to share information with others. You become a better person and a better writer. The best reason? You can make money doing it!

I bet you already knew all of that, but it’s nice to be reminded.

One very last thing before we get started:

Creating your own blog can take a little while, probably up to 30 minutes. So grab yourself a coffee or juice (whatever you fancy) and let’s get stuck in. If you need any help during the set-up process, get in touch with me here and I’ll help as best I can and answer any questions you might have).

The Steps Covered In This Blogging Guide

It’s nowhere near as difficult as setting up a website from scratch (there’s very little technical ability needed here). In fact, there’s no coding required by you. Good news, huh?

How to Start a Blog in 5 Steps:

There’s five main steps you need to do in order to start a blog. If you follow this guide exactly, you’ll have your own blog set up in 30 minutes or less.

Choose your preferred blog platformChoose web hosting for your blogSetting up a blog on your own domainDesign your blogUseful resources for blogging

So, we made it. Phew. Better late than never! So, without further ado, let’s jump into step 1.

Step 1 – Choose your preferred blogging platform

Choosing where you want to build blog is pretty much the first thing you have to do. I’m going to take a leap and assume you’ve heard of WordPress, and this is the platform I advocate. It’s massive.

It’s by far one of the biggest blogging platforms in the world, with countless plugins and add-ons and almost infinite ways to design and layout your blog.

There are more than 82 million active users of WordPress = a lot, basically.

There are other alternatives however, and they are listed below:

Blogger – Definitely the next best thing to WordPress.Tumblr – Half social network, half blog. Interesting, and very simple to use.

Even though WordPress is bigger (and probably better) than those two, here are my reasons why you should still go with WordPress:

Super easy set-up and is free to useTons of free themes and layouts (I’m not kidding, there’s gazillions). There’s a massive support forum in case you get stuck (you won’t, but it’s nice to have it there if you need it).Your blog will be insanely fast and it’ll also look Functionalityand form – perfect!People can interact with you easily. Your content can be shared, commented on, and so on.

Here’s an article about different blogging platforms (including WordPress), give it a read:

How to Choose a Blogging Platform– (updated for 2017)

Now, Step 2 (see, we’re moving fast now!)

Step 2 – Self-hosting or a free alternative?

Whoa, slow down there! This is the biggest decision you’ll have to make before we go any further. You need to decide whether to pay for your blog or grab a free one.

WordPress, Tumblr and Blogger all offer free blogs for anyone. Awesome, right? It’s perfect for those of us who aren’t super serious about blogging. But it doeshave downsides:

1) You won’t be able to get your OWN domain name

On a free blog, your blog’s web address (your URL) will be butt-ugly. Like, really ugly. In short, create a free blog with any other the above free blog services and it’ll look like this:

yourblog.wordpress.comyourblog.blogspot.comyourblog.tumblr.com

I know, ugly right?

2) Limits and more limits

There are some limits to free blogs. You can’t fully monetize it, and you don’t have the possibility to upload all those videos and images you want to show everyone – it’s all limited. Worse still, you won’t even have access to the free themes offered by WordPress.

3) You DON’T OWN your blog

It might sound silly at first, but you don’t actually own your blog. It’s hosted on someone else’s web property and they can delete it if they want so. They have done so in the past, and keep doing it in the future. Which means all your hard work on your blog, all those countless hours of writing blog posts might be vanished within seconds. Sad…

On the other hand, with a self-hosted blog on your own domain name – you are the REAL owner of your blog. You’ll be able to name your blog whatever you want, for example “YourName.com” or “YourAwesomeBlog.com. You can end it with .com, .co.uk, .net, .org, or virtually any other web suffix. Add to that unlimited bandwidth for videos, images and content plus the free themes and you have a winning combo.

So how much is hosting and a domain name? Not as much as you’re thinking, fortunately. It usually works out to about $5 to $10 per month, depending on your hosting provider which is less than a couple of coffees.

If you still have questions, here’s some further information for you to look at:

Should I Choose a Hosted or Non-hosted Blogging Platform?

Step 3 – Start a blog on your own domain (if you chose self-hosting and a custom domain)

I’m going to push ahead based on the premise you’ve chosen WordPress, and if you haven’t, you should. Seriously, it’s the best.

If you’re still a little confused by what a self-hosted blog is, allow me to explain and how you can go about setting one up for yourself.

You’ll need to come up with a domain name you like and also choose a hosting company that can host your blog.

Domain: The domain is basically the URL of your website. Examples: google.com (Google.com is the domain), Facebook.com (Facebook.com is the domain). See? Simple!Hosting: Hosting is basically the company that puts your website up on the internet so everyone else can see it. Everything will be saved on there. Think of it as a computer hard-drive on the internet where your blog will be saved.

Personally, I use iPage (for my blog domain and hosting), and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about it. It’s probably one of the cheapest (less than $2.50 per month) hosting providers out there. A domain name will cost around $10-15 a year, but with iPage they throw that in for free :). Big smiles for that! They’re the providers I use for all of my blogs, including the one you’re reading right now.

If for any reason you don’t want to go with iPage, feel free to choose your own hosting company. Most, if not all of them, should have a “one-click” WordPress install solution on their admin panel.

That button will automatically install WordPress on your blog. Did I say it was simple or what?

All you need to do is sign up with iPage (or your chosen provider), choose your hosting plan and a domain name and look for the one-click WordPress install button on the admin panel.

WordPress essentials aren’t often needed, but I’d recommend whois privacy (that will keep all your personal details private) and definitely automated backups (this’ll save your website just in case anything fails or disappears, so you won’t lose any or very little of your blog).
